Difference Between Proxy and VPN: Why OpenVPN Files Are Not Used?

Proxy and VPN services are two different internet security and privacy technologies that are often confused. While both offer the ability to hide your IP address and connect to the internet from a different location, their operating principles, connection methods, and use cases differ from each other.

In this article, we will discuss in detail why OpenVPN configuration files (.ovpn) are not used in proxy services, the fundamental differences between proxy and VPN, and how proxy connections are established.

Key Differences Between Proxy and VPN

Operating Logic

VPN (Virtual Private Network): VPN routes all internet traffic from your device through an encrypted tunnel to the VPN server. It works at the operating system level and covers the traffic of all applications on your computer. It provides encrypted connections using protocols like OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2 and works with configuration files (.ovpn, .conf, etc.).

Proxy: Proxy servers work at the application level. They only route traffic from the application or browser that has proxy settings configured. HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS5 protocols are used. For connection, IP address, port number, and optionally username/password credentials are sufficient.

Connection Method

VPN connections require special client software (OpenVPN GUI, Tunnelblick, etc.) and configuration files. Proxy connections are made directly through application settings or operating system proxy settings - no configuration files are needed.

Encryption and Security

VPN connections provide end-to-end encryption by default and prevent your ISP (Internet Service Provider) from seeing your traffic. In proxy services, when HTTPS proxy is used, the connection is encrypted, but when HTTP proxy is used, traffic is not encrypted. SOCKS5 proxy also does not provide encryption by default but has a more flexible and faster structure.

Why Is There No OpenVPN File in Proxy Services?

Proxy services do not provide OpenVPN configuration files (.ovpn) because they do not use VPN technology. Proxy servers operate with a different protocol and connection architecture:

  • Protocol Difference: OpenVPN is a VPN-specific protocol and is not used in proxy services. Proxy services use HTTP/HTTPS and SOCKS5 protocols.
  • Connection Simplicity: For proxy connection, only IP address, port number, and authentication credentials are sufficient. Complex configuration files are not needed.
  • Application-Level Operation: While VPN routes all system traffic, proxy only routes traffic from specific applications. Therefore, it does not require system-level configuration.

How to Set Up a Proxy Connection?

The information you need to connect to proxy services includes:

  • Proxy IP Address or Hostname: The address of the proxy server you will connect to (e.g., isp.livaproxy.com or 185.x.x.x)
  • Port Number: The port the proxy server is listening on (e.g., 12345)
  • Protocol Type: HTTP/HTTPS or SOCKS5
  • Username and Password: Required for proxies that require authentication

Proxy Setup in Browser

Most modern browsers allow you to configure proxy settings directly. In browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, you can enter the proxy server IP and port number from the network settings section. Alternatively, browser extensions like FoxyProxy and Proxy SwitchyOmega provide more advanced proxy management.

Application-Based Proxy Usage

Many software and tools allow you to configure their own proxy settings. For example, in applications like torrent clients, automation software, and social media management tools, connections can be established by entering the required information in the proxy settings section.

System-Wide Proxy Settings (Windows/macOS/Linux)

System-wide proxy settings can be configured in operating systems, but in this case, some applications that do not support proxy settings may not connect through the proxy. Unlike VPN, proxy is not mandatory at the system level.
